Die Burger Cycle Tour
In excess of 6000 cyclists will participate in Die Burger Cycle Tour taking place in Stellenbosch on Saturday 5 December.
The tour provides three entry options, for a 98 km route, a 44 km route and a 15 km family funride. All three routes will commence at Stellenbosch High School on Saturday morning.
The 98km route is also a seeding event for the 2011 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. Starting from Stellenbosch High School, cyclists will encounter the first climb of the day when they make their way up the scenic Old Helshoogte Pass, before descending through Pniel towards Franschhoek. When they reach the R45, riders will take a right and continue past Drakenstein Correctional Centre towards Paarl, hugging the vineyards alongside the mountains and joining the R301 to Wellington. After the left-turn onto the R44, riders will ride along the Agter Paarl Road and over the last rolling hills for the day before heading back to the finish in Stellenbosch.
Participant in the 44 km route will follow the long route riders up and over the Old Helshoogte Pass and through Pniel. From there, the route will split just after the railway line at Boschendal and cyclists will take a left onto the R45. The two routes join again on the R44, about 15km before the finish in Stellenbosch.
If you are new to road cycling or have a budding cyclist in your family, then the 15 km family funride is the perfect event. The ride starts at Stellenbosch High School in Merriman Street from where you will cycle along the scenic Jonkershoek road for 8km before turning around at the entrance to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and cycle back to finish, just around the corner from the school. Though cyclists will do a bit of climbing towards Jonkershoek, this is an easy and non-technical route and definitely not aimed at serious cyclists. Please remember that young riders under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
