The Black Tie Ensemble (BTE), proudly funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), presents Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. These one act operas will be performed as a double bill with both operas directed by Marcus Desando. This production will take place at The South African State Theatre’s Drama Theatre on 28 September, 30 September, 2 October, 12 October, 14 October and 16 October.

Mascangi’s Cavalleria Rusticana filled with love, jealousy, scandal and murder will be performed first and it will be followed by the wonderful ensemble opera, about typical human behaviour when faced with the prospect of a looming inheritance, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.

For this production the Black Tie Orchestra will be conducted by the Austrian born conductor, Philipp Pointner. In Cavalleria Rusticana, the role of the tragic heroine Santuzza will be portrayed by Loveline Madumo and the role of her betraying lover will be portrayed by the Georgian tenor, George Oniani.

The role of Gianni Schicchi will be portrayed by Thabang Senekal and the role of his lovely daughter Lauretta will be shared by Caroline Modiba and Caroline Nkwe.

The conductor, Philipp Pointner is no stranger to South Africa, as he was the conductor and repetitor at Cape Town Opera from 1994 until 1996 and a guest conductor at the Grahamstown Festival. Currently he is the Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Nürnberg in Germany. He was the guest conductor at the Opera House Köln and at the Radio Symphony Orchestra Köln. He was also the guest conductor at the Symphony Orchestra Oviedo, Spain and at the Opera Hourse Bern, Switzerland, recently.

George Oniani has performed with international artists such as Dolora Zajick in Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, he has sung the following roles, Roberto in Puccini’s Le Villi; Radamess in Verdi’s Aida; Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly; Don Carlo by Verdi; Don Jose from Bizet’s Carmen and Turiddu from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana to name a few. During this year he has sung the role of Prinz from Dvorak’s Rusalka and Boris in Katia Kabanova by Janaceck.
