Dorian Mass by Herbert Howells

Dorian Mass by Herbert Howells

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST:

Solemn Sung Mass
Dorian Mass by Herbert Howells
Sung by the UCT Choir under the directorship of John Woodland.

Herbert Howells composed his ‘Mass in the Dorian Mode’ for Dr Richard Runciman Terry for use at Westminster Cathedral, as part of a project to reintroduce English 16th Century music at the Cathedral. While this Mass moves away from Howell’s lush harmonic language, it reveals his sympathy for the Tudor music which was to influence his subsequent work.
