Missa Prima Lux Australis by Christopher Cockburn
SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER:
Solemn Sung Eucharist
Missa Prima Lux Australis
Choir with orchestral marimba and vibraphone accompaniment
The Missa Prima Lux Australis (Mass for a Southern Dawn) was composed in 1994 for performance at the National Arts Festival service in Grahamstown Cathedral, where the composer, Christopher Cockburn, was organist and choirmaster. It has subsequently been performed at two South African National Summer Schools of the Royal School of Church Music. It is written for SATB choir (with divisions) accompanied by melodic percussion instruments. The four movements are strongly contrasted in character, and the work combines modal counterpoint with elements of African music.
