NMMU 50th Anniversary Gala Concert

NMMU 50th Anniversary Gala Concert

The NMMU Music Department is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. A highlight of the celebrations will be a weekend of music 7-9 October that will highlight the diversity and musical prowess of staff and students.

“The Other” concert will take place on Friday 7 October at the Roof Garden Bar and will feature music of non-classical nature featuring anything from Rock & Blues to Boeremusiek to Electronica and House.

Saturday 8 October will feature a “Jazz Jol” at the South Campus Auditorium featuring NMMU Jazz Ensembles as well as lecturers John Edwards, Ulagh Williams and drummer Lloyd Martin.  Guest artist for the evening will be Mike Rossi from UCT.  Several alumni will also take to the stage.

Sunday 9 October at 15:00 the Feather Market Centre will be the venue for a Gala Concert that will showcase NMMU musical ensembles that include the NMMU Horn Ensemble, the NMMU Brass Ensemble, the NMMU Strings, the NMMU Flute Ensemble, the NMMU Wind Symphony, NMMU Symphony Orchestra and the NMMU Choir. The ensembles will be joined by various alumni and members of strategic partner, the ECPO.

Soloists will include new voice lecturer, Njabulo Mthimkulu, a vocal ensemble from NMMU Music Department, piano lecturer, Dr Erika Bothma and a special alumni contribution by Lucretia Geswint accompanied by Antonio Lawack on the Feathermarket organ. Repertoire will include virtually the entire spectrum of genres from baroque to modern, including excerpts from the Grieg Piano Concerto and Dvorak’s Symphony no.8.

The development of musical ensembles have literally exploded over recent years and the concert will be a fantastic opportunity for the public to experience the wide tonal and musical range on offer and of course to participate in the celebration of 50 years of music at NMMU.

Ticket prices cost R50 per person for each of the concerts and are available from the Music Department at South Campus and the Music Conservatoire at Bird Street Campus from 16th September 2016.
