Organist Winand Grundling’s Toccata

Winner of the 2010 ATKV-Muzik Competition, organist Winand Grundling, released his first cd/dvd, Toccata & other Organ Masterpieces, at a concert in Pretoria earlier this year. The cd came just months prior to Grundling being announced overal winner of ATKV-Muzik, the prestigious annual music competition presented by the ‘Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging’s’. He has won the organ category of the competition twice, in 2007 and 2009. 

Grundling completed his school education at the Brandwag High School, Uitenhage and later obtained a BMus degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University of Port Elizabeth. His organ studies started with Colin Campbell in 2002 and only two years later he was crowned the overall winner of the ABSA National Youth Music Competition.

Winand has performed as organ recitalist on national as well as international level. He was chosen as one of seventeen organists to participate in the Organ School of Calgary in 2006, Canada, where he also received master classes. He has won the Charles Bryars bursary twice, in 2007 and 2008.

In 2007 and 2009 he participated in and won the organ category of the ATKV-Muziq. A SAMRO merit award is made to him in 2009 and he also wins the Mabel Quick Music bursary competition. In the same year he passes the ATCL Trinity Recital exam [licenciate] as well as Unisa’s performance licenciate with disctinction.

During the 2009 Unisa Overseas Music Bursary Competition, Winand becomes the overall winner. Early in 2010 he won the SAKOV Masters degree bursary. He is organist at the DR church, Stellenbosch Welgelegen and accompanist of the Huguenot High School choir. He is currently furthering his studies with Mario Nell at the University of Stellenbosch.

Grundling also forms part of a Stellenbosch cabaret group called C2C.
