11.11.2012  The outstanding recording of music for violin and orchestra performed by Alexander Gilman and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Perry So, will be launched in Cape Town this week.

Works featured on the recording are the violin concertos by Erich Korngold (1897-1957) and Samuel Barber (1910-1981), the Carmen Fantasy by Franz Waxman (1906-1967), and the famous theme tune from the film Schindler’s List, composed by John Williams (*1932).

The recording, engineered by Marek Pinski, was nominated for the prestigious Diapason d´Or award, chosen as CD of the week by the German Financial Time, play listed on Lufthansa first class flights, CD-Tip on Bavarian Broadcast, Sound-Tip in Audio Magazine, and received with outstanding reviews in the classical music press.

Alexander Gilman is one of his generation’s most promising violinists. After giving his first solo concert at age seven in Munich, Germany Philharmonic Concert Hall, Alexander Gilman has now performed in the most renowned concert halls all over the world. He has worked with conductors such as Neeme Järvi, David Zinman, Bernard Haitink, Michael Luig, Eri Klas, Perry So, Michael Sanderling and many others and is regularly invited to major international music festivals as a soloist, chamber musician and lecturer.

The CD, released on the OehmsClassics recording label, will be launched at a symphony concert presented at the Cape Town City Hall on Thu 15 November. Gilman will perform the Violin Concerto Nr 2 by Sergei Prokoviev (1891-1953) and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will be directed by South African conductor Conrad van Alphen.
