Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Development and Education

Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Development and Education

The core business of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is performing as a symphony orchestra of international standard. However, the nurturing of future musicians and the development of youth music in Cape Town, plus developing new audiences in this country, are of equal importance.

Since 2004 the CPO has been training young musicians in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE). In 2009 satellite training centres were set up in three township venues to train 9 – 10 year olds, who will ultimately feed into the CPYO and CPYWE. Most of the youngsters being trained are from previously disadvantaged communities.

The members of the professional orchestra are committed to a programme of teaching and training through regular workshops, master classes and one-on-one tuition. Apart from this mentoring programme, young conductors from local communities are also being trained. The orchestra and the youth orchestras are empowered thanks to the committed financial support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
