South African pianist Dr Lisa Engelbrecht has acquired a wealth of practical musical experience and academic training. She holds the B.Mus degree from the University of Cape Town, the Diploma di Perfezziamento from the Piccolo Conservatorio (Milan, Italy), the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Performance from the Royal College of Music (London), the M.Mus degree from the University of Illinois (USA).

In 2008 she was awarded the Doctor of Music degree by the University of Cape Town in Accompaniment Performance and Thesis - “The Operatic Piano Reduction as an Art Form- a Critical Evaluation”.

She has held positions as operatic vocal coach / répetiteur / accompanist at the British Youth Opera in London, at Les Jeunes Voix du Rhin in Strasbourg, at the Renata Scotto Academy in Italy, at the Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera, and at Glimmerglass Opera in New York.

From 2002 to 2008 she was a vocal coach at Cape Town Opera. At present she is principal vocal coach at the Opera School of the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town.

As operatic vocal coach, she has built up a wide operatic repertoire. Recent productions which she has coached include Puccini’s La Boheme, Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Wagner’s der Fliegende Holländer and Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma.

She has also accompanied many Opera School scenes programmes at the Baxter theatre, most recently, ‘Opera Unknown’ (Baroque and French Romantic excerpts) and Swedish Showcase (Mozart, Strauss and Wagner).

She is the music director and accompanist for Darling Opera’s inaugural performances of Don Giovanni which takes place on 9 and 6 February as part of the Darling Music Experience ( 8 - 17 Feb 2013).
